The Fluent Body, a training method devised by Sarah Brumgart, is an in-depth process for examining and realizing the vast potential of the body in motion. A holistic approach to fitness and movement education, it cultivates a highly-toned, "multi-lingual" body that is well-versed and proficient in a variety of movement languages. Highly effective and self-sufficient, this workout requires only the floor without the necessity of elaborate machines or other apparatus. A compassionate and caring teacher, Sarah emphasizes gradual progressions from pre-beginner to advanced levels in a manner that is both nurturing and challenging. Her expertise in analyzing and distilling the essence of any movement enables the student to perform it with clarity and dignity. This well-planned and thoughtful procedure, formulated over her many years of teaching experience since 1968, guarantees a feeling of accomplishment and safety at every stage. Respectful and mindful of the uniqueness and particular needs of each individual and encouraging cooperative interaction, she customizes her classes and supports students in becoming self-aware and vocalizing their own observations and insights. Sessions include one or a combination of the following activities.

Yoga/Meditation

This yoga style developed by Sarah Brumgart is artfully choreographed as a continuous dance-like sequence combining classical yoga poses with innovative preliminary stretches. Following a natural cycle from lying on the floor, ascending to standing, then returning to the floor, it flows seamlessly and organically in an efficient, logical order. This format ensures a complete and thorough practice of a multitude of positions and engenders a quiet and introspective atmosphere. Smooth and continuous breathing is encouraged throughout to achieve tranquility in both the body and mind. After the body has been stretched, bent, twisted, and wrung-free of accumulated tension and stress, a deep and transcendental relaxation follows, restoring a feeling of calmness and balance throughout one's entire being. This progression is excellent preparation for the meditation that ends the class, allowing one to sit steadily and comfortably with a quiet mind and direct all attention inwardly upon a chosen object of concentration. At this point, students may choose to be instructed in different meditational pathways or free to follow their own personal faith and/or intuitive guidance.

Pilates Mat

Sarah Brumgart has modified the highly complex and rigorous pilates mat regimen into a clear and fluid version that promises a manageable, satisfying, and rewarding experience. Made understandable and doable from the start, it involves calisthenics which focus primarily on building strength in the core of the body. This pursuit develops firmer abdominal muscles, improved back support, and better posture, resulting in a sturdier physique and a more striking and confident appearance. It also provides a stable foundation for greater ease of movement throughout the entire body. Practiced with precision and concentration, it fosters acute body awareness and a sharp mental focus as well, enabling one to move with greater accuracy and facility. This skill then transfers to any physical activity in life. Movement becomes more economical and enjoyable as tasks and endeavors are done with less hardship and strain.

Sarah Strength

This unique routine includes intricate exercises for the torso, upper limbs, and lower limbs. Developed by Sarah Brumgart as a conditioning program for her dances, it is a carefully paced and developmental process that guides a person from very beginner to highly advanced levels. While similar to techniques found in gymnastics, ballet and modern dance, it is not limited to a restricted vocabulary of a particular movement style. Rather, it prepares the body to move skillfully and intelligently in any form or manner. A meticulous procedure involving isolated movements that require keen mental alertness, it exercises the brain as well, particularly the left hemisphere. While most body-building systems involve "gross motor" movements that are broad and energetic and employ large muscle groups, Sarah Strength comprises "fine motor" movements that are more complicated and detailed and utilize smaller muscles. This more subtle yet still intense approach creates a lean, less bulky physique that is indeed sinewy and hardy but pliable and versatile as well.

Joint Mobility

Based on a mathematical approach to movement analysis, this easy-to-understand process investigates the range of motion in each joint of the body. Using geometry, it defines where the different bones of the skeleton can move in space. While any movement can be defined as conical (three dimensional), or plane (two-dimensional) or rotational (one dimensional), most joints are limited to only one or two of these motions, and few are capable of all three. For anyone wanting a clear and diagnostic comprehension of movement, this type of awareness is both enlightening and practical. But mostly, it is simply fun to awaken each part of the body that is otherwise taken for granted, to discover and manifest its latent potential, and improve coordination and increase agility along the way. Since every joint in the body is addressed, it also acts as a "movement massage" that can be helpful in recovering from injuries, releasing contracted areas of the body, and unlocking stored or blocked energy.

Creative Movement

Formulated by Sarah Brumgart, this right-brain experience offers a playful opportunity to "move outside the box." Instead of being limited to set and strict exercises like those of conventional workouts, students are free to explore the many different ways a body can move. Both enjoyable and educative, this self-empowering approach involves structured improvisations that investigate all the universal basic elements of movement (space, time, tension). For example, a study about space would involve moving through different vertical levels from lying on the floor to jumping in the air, or moving horizontally from forward to back and side to side. A study in time would involve moving from slow to fast, and pausing for different lengths of time. A study in tension would involve contracting the muscles lightly, or firmly, or not at all in a released, limp way. Throughout this adventurous process, greater movement possibilities are discovered, resulting in a body that is increasingly articulate, adroit, and expressive.
